Inside Maharishi’s Ashram is a personal account of one woman’s spiritual journey, her experiences of being close to and working with the Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, with the Transcendental Meditation organization and movement, including her twenty years as a faculty member at Maharishi International University (MIU). In a lively, down-to-earth, often humorous voice the author tells the story of her interactions with Maharishi, his guidance and influence in her life, and all in the context of family, friends, and global affairs. She begins with her skeptical entry into the world of meditation in El Paso, Texas, and details her growth of consciousness from there to becoming a TM teacher in Fiuggi Fonte, Italy, her four years in France and Switzerland in the movement headquarters, and her trips to South Africa, Armenia, and India on behalf of the TM movement. She includes her firsthand account of Apartheid, the devastating consequences of the earthquake in Armenia in 1990, and her various stays in India learning about Ayurveda, Vedic Science, the Indian science of jyotish (Indian astrology), and other Vedic programs and techniques. Rhoda’s story offers an inside view of the biggest spiritual movement of the twentieth century, and an inside look at how one of the greatest figures of the modern age worked to influence the trends of time while he simultaneously directed the evolution of his closest disciples.

This wonderful autobiography/memoir is a fascinating true life tale of one woman's life, family and lifelong involvement with her guru - Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. So, unlike many other autobiographies, this book also is a very complete history of the Transcendental Meditation movement from about 1970 to 2008.The title has a hidden meaning because Maharishi's ashram was not just one building in the foothills of the Himalayas, near the Ganges river. His ashram was wherever he was, including Switzerland, Holland and Spain and Italy for the Majorca and Fuiggi TM teacher training courses.
Even though this volume is rather large - 530 pages - it reads like a good novel. There is always something new, something exciting and many deep philosophical teachings of Maharishi.
There is a 3rd layer to this story: the history and development of Maharishi International University, which began in Southern California but then relocated to Fairfield, Iowa (where it still is, although now it is called Maharishi University of Management).
Personally, I love memoirs and autobiographies, particularly of people who have done something interesting with their lives - saints, generals, artists, writers, explorers, founder of big companies.
Well, I guess this is a story of saints - Maharishi, of course - but also Rhoda Orme-Johnson and her husband David Orme-Johnson, who contributed greatly to creating and collecting scientific research on the TM program.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who just wants a good, uplifting read and, of course, to all true seekers of Truth.

You will meet an ordinary woman from Cleveland, whose eye was caught by a golden thread of love, first for her husband David, and through him for a flame of peace that shone through Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Despite her protests, she couldn't let go, and as she gently pulled and pulled, an ordinary life unraveled and became extraordinary. Now, looking back across 40 years, she has come home whole- and you will as well.
This is an interesting autobiography of someone who worked with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for about two or three decades. It's written in such a manner that the reader feels as if the author is right there telling her story.

I love this book! I loved the clear, deep, simple and authentic expressions of Rhoda's life around Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I loved the views inside the "inner" chamber. I loved the urgings I felt to get to bed early so I could read her book as I fell asleep. I loved the unblemished loving reawakening of a time so many of us experienced that has seemed to slip away. I loved having so many of my shadowy experiences filled in by Rhoda's sharing of her experiences. I loved the feeling of intimately being led through Maharishi's life and his unfathomable contributions to world consciousness. I love feeling proud to be a teacher of Transcendental Meditation for 40+ years. JGD! Thank YOU Rhoda for a beautiful work of art!

This is a beautifully written book, full of stories from the author's and her illustrious husband's time spent working closely with Maharishi. She is an excellent writer, having been head of the literature department for many years. The author is honest and forthcoming in sharing many personal stories that have not been known before. Raising children while doing a PhD was interesting. Nice pictures shared too. I loved her self-reflective admissions about her own personal personality, and also how she took some liberties with the rules of the university to do what she wanted to do. Overall, an entertaining and illuminating read.
I loved this poignant, candid, humble, kind-hearted woman’s account of her adventures as part of the circle of the devoted leaders of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s TM movement for four decades. An amazing life full of true wisdom and knowledge of consciousness. This is the courageous spiritual journey of a feminist Teacher/Writer/Mathematician balancing a huge load of responsibilities as mother of energetic teens, marriage to the love of her life and leader of the TM movement, her spiritual commitment and devotion to her extended family-Phew !! all while learning to be guided by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. She shares both the blissful adventures and rigorous challenges of her purposeful life teaching meditation to thousands in disaster stricken areas-all while her heart and consciousness blossoms.
